An improved form with yellow-scarlet and green foliage all on one plant, it makes a striking bedding plant for its foliage alone and produces erect brush like deep red 6in flower spikes which are good for cutting. Also suitable for growing in 5-6in pots. Flowers late summer. Height 60cm (24in).
| Sowing time: | Indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost or outdoors in long season areas after last frost once weather has warmed |

| Sowing depth: | 2mm (1/16in) |
Sow at 21 -24C (70-75F) in a good seed sowing mix. Keep the mix damp but not wet. Sealing in a plastic bag after sowing is helpful. Germination usually takes 10-14 days.
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into pots or boxes and grow on in cooler conditions. Gradually acclimatize to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 30-40cm (12-18in) apart in a sunny spot in good rich soil.
The cut flowers last well in water and can also be dried. If this is done carefully the flowers keep their color for some time. For pot plants provide a humid atmosphere.
