Soak seeds overnight in cold water and/or file a tiny notch in the seed coat before sowing. Germinate at 20-30C (68-86F) individually in pots on the surface of a good free draining, damp seed sowing mix. Apply a layer of sowing mix or vermiculite, 6mm (¼in) deep. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a plastic bag until after germination which usually takes 10-17 days.
Transplant seedlings into 13cm (5in) pots and grow on in cooler conditions for at least 14 days before planting out in late spring after all risk of frost. Plant out 30cm (12in) apart. For pot plants, transplant in a soil-based mix to 20cm (8in) pots and grow in a cool, well ventilated position with shade from direct sun.
Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage further blooming.
Provide a trellis or other support for the vines to climb.
Harmful if eaten. Seeds are poisonous.
