Best sown where they are to flower. Sow very thinly in well cultivated soil which has been raked to a fine tilth.
Thin out the seedlings to 23cm (9in) apart and transplant the thinnings. They prefer a sunny site and well drained soil. Gather when the heads have changed colour but before they start to break up, and hang them in bunches, heads down in a cool, dry, airy place.
