| Sowing time: | After last frost so that pods will mature in the cooler weather of late summer to early fall |
|---|---|
| Sowing depth: | 2cm (¾in) deep in drills 45-60cm (18-24in) apart. |
Prefers to be grown in fertile, moist yet well drained soil which has had plenty of well rotted compost dug into it the previous autumn. For an early start sow in April indoors or under glass and plant out after the last expected frost. Outdoors do not sow until at least 10 days after the last frost 5cm (2in) deep, 15cm (6in) apart in rows 38cm (15in) apart.
Thin out or transplant to 20-30cm (9-12in) apart. Flowers require pollination to set pods, unlike pole or snap beans.
Provide netting, strings or canes for them to climb. Water regularly and liquid feed every 14 days during mid summer. A thick mulch will help conserve moisture. Pick the beans regularly a little on the young side to ensure top quality and prolonged cropping.
Please note that beans must be cooked before eating to avoid discomfort.
