Sow in a peat based seed compost in late winter and early spring, early summer or autumn in trays or boxes indoors, or in a coldframe, at about 15-18C (60-65F). Too high a temperature or drying out can prevent germination.
Sow thinly into moist compost and just cover the seed. Prick out into pots or boxes. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost 23-30cm (9-12in) apart in most soils, sun or part shade.
Summer sowings should be moved to a coldframe and planted out in early spring.
The petals make a colourful addition to green salads and can be candied to top desserts etc.
