Sow in a good seed compost. Germination usually takes 6-10 days at 24C (75F).
Transplant when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3 inch) pots and then 13cm (5 inch) pots before planting 1m (3ft) apart in the greenhouse border, frames or cloches, or outdoors after all risk of frost. Pinch out the growing point when 5 leaves have been formed. Train the main stem upwards and the shoots which are produced on horizontal wires. In a frame or outdoors select 4 shoots and train them out in a star shape and stop when 1m (3ft) long. Under cloches train 2 shoots each way along the cloches.
Hand pollinate by placing a male flower inside a female bloom. Female flowers have a swollen part at the base of the bloom.
