An attractive red and white striped heirloom dating back to 1896. This small flowered variety has the strongest of fragrances, and makes a spectacular cut flower Ideal for growing up a trellis, a wig-wam of canes or an obelisk in a container.

Soak seeds overnight in warm water before sowing 3 seeds per 7.5cm (3in) pot, in free draining, damp seed sowing mix. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a plastic bag and place at 20-25C (68-77F) until after germination which takes 7-21 days. Do not exclude light.
Gradually acclimate plants sown indoors to cooler conditions before planting out in spring when the ground has warmed, 23 to 30cm (9-12in) apart. Pinch out the growing point once the first or second pair of leaves has opened. Water freely during dry weather and apply well rotted manure occasionally. Regular removal of spent flowers will encourage further blooms.
