Highly desirable and dramatic plants with large, lush green foliage from which rise strong, erect stems bearing pineapple-like heads with clusters of small starry flowers, some of which are bicoloured. T&M have selected some of the most impressive hybrids for container and border use.

Sow in pots or trays of good seed compost. Place in a propagator or warm place, providing a temperature of about 15-20C (59-68F). Cover with a very fine sprinkling of vermiculite. After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist b ut not waterlogged, germination will usually take 21-30 days.
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost. Provide a rich, well-drained soil in full sun, spacing plants by 30cm (12in).
