Watering Can - Haws Indoor Solid Copper Can |
A handsome, decorative plant with tall stems containing "steps" or whorls of bright orange flowers. Ideal for the back of borders, or as a talking point planted in large containers on the patio or conservatory.
| Sowing time: | mid February to March. |
|---|
Sow on the surface of a good seed compost just covering the seed with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Germination takes 14-21 days at 18-20C (65-70F). Sealing in a polythene bag after sowing is helpful. Lower the temperature after germination. The seedlings are naturally tall and look a little like nettle seedlings at first.
When large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings to boxes or 7.5cm (3in) pots. When well grown gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out in late spring 1-1.25m (3-4ft) apart in full sun and well drained soil.
In a warm sheltered spot they may overwinter successfully outdoors if protected from hard frosts with bracken etc. For container plants water freely from June to late August and sparingly through the winter when they will need a minimum temperature of 5-7C (40-45F). Cut back to within 15cm (6in) of the ground in late February.
