A greatly improved form of this old favorite strain of garden pinks which when in bloom give off a distinctive haze effect produced by the heavily fringed petals. Easy to raise, sweet scented and in shades of carmine, pink, lilac and white. They make excellent cut flowers or can be used to edge beds, borders etc. or fill containers with lively color. Flowers spring/summer. Height 30cm (12in).
| Sowing time: | late winter to early summer. |
|---|---|
| Sowing depth: | 3mm (1/8in) |
Sow in a good free draining seed compost. Make sure the compost is moist but not wet and seal in a polythene bag until after germination, which usually takes 14-21 days at 18-21C (65-70F).
Transplant when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Later plant out 30cm (12in) apart into well drained soil preferably containing lime, in a sunny spot.
They may produce a few flower buds in late autumn/winter, these will flower early but won't be so attractive and should be removed.
The spicy clove flavoured flowers add a zest to salads and can be candied, made into jam or sweet-sour pickle!.
